The Alen BreatheSmart thrives in mid-size to large rooms. The large fan spins a little slower than other air purifiers, but this slow speed does not hurt the air purifier's ability to cycle air. Instead, the slow speed controls the noise. The BreatheSmart makes as much noise as air purifiers half its size. Alen claims that the noise level is pink noise, which is a low-frequency sound. Pink noise is supposedly soothing and less noticeable than other sound waves. However, in our tests, we felt that the BreatheSmart was loud, especially when automatically adjusting its fan speeds.

The clean air delivery rate (CADR) shows that the Alen BreatheSmart is best suited for mid-sized rooms. In larger rooms, it will still clean the air, but not as quickly as you may need. The BreatheSmart is best at removing pollen. In fact, Alen offers a 60-day Allergy Relief Guarantee, promising to give you a full refund and pay for return shipping.

The Alen BreatheSmart has all of the basic safety features that we look for, including Energy Star verification and an Underwriters Laboratories Inc. Listed Mark. The air purifier uses filters that meet HEPA requirements. The BreatheSmart is ozone free when you are not running the ionizer. If you do use the optional ionizer, the released ozone is well below safety standards. If you have breathing problems, it's always better to be safe than sorry, and this air purifier still does a great job cleaning the air.

However, it should be noted that if you use the optional ionizer, it will emit a small level of ozone. When a purifier charges the air to capture particles, it replaces the air with ozone, although at an extremely low level. If you have breathing issues and want to avoid ozone, simply turn off the optional ionizer.

The Alen BreatheSmart has a sophisticated filter monitor, allowing you to maximize the filter's lifespan. While many air purifiers only monitor the fan speed and track how long the filter should last, the BreatheSmart's monitor also factors information from the air sensor. This sensor shows the air quality through a three-color LED display. If the air is clean, the fan runs at a lower speed, and if the sensor picks up more particles, the fan speeds up to capture the pollutants. This automatic speed control allows you to use the same filter for longer.

There are two primary ways to operate the BreatheSmart. If you decide to make it an active air purifier, the air sensor will constantly adjust the fan speeds. However, if you don't want to use as much energy, the automatic mode sets the air purifier on an operation timer. After at least four hours of operation, the BreatheSmart goes into a sleep mode and stops filtering air until you turn it back on.

Finally, if you prefer to run your air purifier all the time but cannot sleep with it running on Turbo, you can set the BreatheSmart to night mode by pressing the power button once. This mode turns down the LED lights and brings the fan to its lower speeds. This way, you can still clean the air in your room, but you won't have to deal with the loud noise of regular operation.
